Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: Patients aged 18–70 years admitted to the emergency room or outpatient clinics with a clinical suspicion of acute appendicitis were approached for inclusion in the trial. The clinical signs included localized right lower quadrant (RLQ) pain and tenderness, with or without fever.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: Patients were excluded if they had an appendiceal diameter larger than 11mm or there were any signs of complications such as appendicolith, extraluminal gas, intraperitoneal fluid or suspected abscess (mass) formation.
