Inclusion criteria
Inclusion criteria: The participants had to be men aged between 18 and 55 years old who met the diagnostic criteria of heroin dependence according to the criteria of Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, forth edition (DSM-IV) (meeting three or more of seven criteria listed in DSM-IV, including tolerance or withdrawal). They were prescribed methadone maintenance treatment (MMT) and took it regularly, had normal blood pressure and heart rate (systolic pressure 140 mmHg; diastolic pressure 90 mmHg; heart rate 100bpm, and provided signed consent forms.
Exclusion criteria
Exclusion criteria: Participants were excluded if they had used addictive drugs other than heroin based on self-reporting or had a positive urine test results during either the recruitment screening or testing, had a current or past history of DSM-IV Axis I disorders, were currently using antidepressants or had depression diagnosed, had clinically evident cognitive impairment, or had self-reported treatment with any prescription drugs during the study period.
