Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: 1. Type 2 diabetes was diagnosed according to the 1999 World Health Organization (WHO) criteria; 2. having symptoms of onset of ischemic stroke within 72 hours (h) preceding admission; 3. diagnosed by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) or computed tomogram (CT); 4. aged >=18 years; 5. written informed consent by patient or legal guardian before study participation.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: 1. neurological deficit proved to be of non-ischemic origin, such as hemorrhagic stroke; 2. transient ischemic attack; 3. other etiologies, such as vasculitis, Moyamoya disease or cancer-related stroke; 4. recent severe infections; 5. patients on fasting; 6. renal impairment (defined as serum creatinine level > 2 mg/dl); 7. respiratory and circulatory failure (heart function grade of NYHA was III or IV with\without oxyhemoglobin saturation less than 60%); 8. patients with various tumors or immune system diseases.
