Inclusion criteria
Inclusion criteria: 1. Aged between 18–65 years; 2. Depressive episode of at least moderate severity according to ICD-10; 3. Written informed consent of participation.
Exclusion criteria
Exclusion criteria: 1. Comorbidity with psychotic symptoms, schizophrenia, schizotypal or delusional disorders, bipolar disorder, mental retardation, active addiction to alcohol or other psychoactive substances excluding nicotine and caffeine, organic-including symptomatic-mental disorders; 2. Severe physical or neurological diseases; 3. Patients with severe suicidal tendencies; 4. pregnancy for women; 5. A history of treatment-resistant depression; 6. Patients who had previously received treatment with either escitalopram or duloxetine; 7. Concomitant use of any psychoactive drug (or any drug with a psychotropic component), except zolpidem or zaleplon as needed for sleep.
