Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: Patients will be included in this study if they are between 18 and 80 years old with a diagnosis of postherpetic neuralgia and visual analogue scale score of 4 or greater for at least 1 month without satisfactory pain relief from conservative treatment (eg, antidepressants, anticonvulsants, opioids, and interventional procedures such as sympathetic blockade).

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: Patients will be excluded if they have a concomitant pain syndrome (such as Complex regional pain syndrome, fibromyalgia, diabetic polyneuropathy, or spinal cord injury), any serious concurrent systemic diseases (such as hyperlipidemia, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, myasthenia gravis, decreased lung function, liver problems, severe renal impairment, shock, or hypokalemia or hyperkalemia) or psychiatric disorders (including schizophrenia, somatization, or acute anxiety). Patients will also be excluded if any of the following criteria is met: (1) any history of cardiac arrhythmias or taking antiarrhythmic drugs; (2) a resting heart rate of less than 55 beats/min or greater than 100 beats/min on electrocardiogram (ECG) screening; (3) females who were pregnant, breastfeeding, or not using a reliable method of contraception; (4) participation in another clinical trial within 30 days of enrollment.
