Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: 1. diagnosed with category IIIA or IIIB chronic prostatitis according to the National Institutes of Health (NIH) consensus criteria; 2. men aged 18 to 50 years; 3. the National Institutes of Health Chronic Prostatitis Symptom Index (NIH-CPSI) total score =15(scale 0–43); 4. with symptoms for =3 months within the preceding 6 months; 5. patients had previously received a first-line conventional treatment (antibiotics, alpha-blockers, anti-inflammatories, phytotherapy) for 3 months that was unsuccessful; 6. volunteer to join this research and sign the informed consent.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: 1. bacterial prostatitis; 2. urinary tract infection within one year; 3. BPH, prostate cancer, urinary stone, or interstitial cystitis; 4. active sexually transmitted diseases (syphilis,gonorrhea); 5. serious medical condition such as congestive heart failure, arrhythmia with or without cardiac pacemaker, chronic pulmonary obstructive disease, and hepatic failure; 6. previous acupuncture treatment within the past 6 months; 7. bleeding disorders, skin infection or fear of needles.
