Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: All children recruited in the cohort study should meet the following inclusion criteria: aged 1 month to 18 months; gestational age >37 completed weeks; 5-minute Apgar score >7; birth weight appropriate for gestational age (2,500–4,000 g); and no illnesses in the month prior to enrollment, and thus no known underlying chronic inflammatory disease. The diagnosis of IgE mediated food allergy was conducted according to recommendations for diagnosis and treatment of infantile food allergy and the literature. Diagnosis of IgE-mediated food allergy is indicated through medical history and physical examination and is confirmed by the presence of antigen-specific IgE and positive food challenge when necessary, including medical history, physical examination, clinical manifestations, skin prick test (SPT), serum food-specific IgE detection screening, food elimination test (elimination diets) and food challenge test (food challenges).

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: The exclusion criteria are the following: any intake of steroidal or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, gastric acidity inhibitors, antibiotics or any other drug during the 2 weeks prior to recruitment; nasal bleeding during the final week before the study; or a history of signs or symptoms of infection or gastrointestinal disease (diarrhea, vomiting, hematochezia, fever).
