Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: Moderate or severe stroke with NIHSS 5–25 at the time of admission or GCS =8, confirmed by CT or MRI, including acute massive cerebral infarction (complete middle cerebral artery territory infarction), massive brainstem infarction, massive intracranial hemorrhage (hematoma volume more than 30 mL) within 14 days after stroke occurrence

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: With history of cardiovascular or respiratory disease, including unstable angina, acute myocardial infarction within 15 days, acute pulmonary heart disease, uncontrolled arrhythmia, moderate or severe valve stenosis, acute myocarditis, uncontrolled hypertension, restrictive lung disease and history of asthma; cognitive difficulties; and use of medications affecting muscle strength (e.g. baclofen).
