Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: (1) Meets the diagnostic criteria for obesity and IR, as well as the TCM syndrome differentiation criteria for WSPD; (2) Aged 15-80 years old male and female; (3) Has given informed consent and can comply with regular follow-ups.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: (1) Secondary obesity; (2) Acute complications, serious infections or liver and kidney dysfunction (e.g. ALT level is 2-fold above the upper limit of normal), cardiopulmonary insufficiency, alcoholism, mental illnesses, and cancer; (3) Pregnant and breastfeeding; (4) Taken weight-loss medications within the past month; (5) History of gastrointestinal bariatric surgery; (6) Clear contraindications for metformin; (7) Diabetes.
