Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: 1) meeting the diagnosis criteria for major depressive disorder according to the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV; 2) having a 24-item Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression (HAMD) score =17; 3) not meet the diagnosis criteria for any psychiatric disorders according to DSM-IV (for healthy controls only); 4) aged 18-65 years; 5) right-handed Han-Chinese; 6) volunteers informed of the study.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: 1) lifetime psychiatric disorders other than depression (for depressed patients only); 2) secondary depression caused by drug or other organic diseases; 3) receiving ECT treatment within recent 6 months; 4) any history of substance abuse or dependence (excluding nicotine); 5) suicidal ideation or behavior; 6) any contraindications for MR scanning; 7) any organic lesion in brain; 8) head truma with loss of consciousness >10min; 9) hepatorenal/cardiopulmonary dysfunction or endocrine disease; 10) glaucoma, amblyopia, or blindness; 11) any evidence of active infections within one week 12) using psychotropic medications or medications known to affect the immune system within 2 weeks; 13) any history of chronic diseases relating to a chronic inflammatory status (including chronic hepatitis, nephritis, pulmonary disease, and autoimmune disorders); 14) documented intellectual impairment.
