Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: Case group: NEC case diagnosis is based on the revised Bell staging diagnostic criteria according to Practical Neonatal Science (Fourth Edition). All NEC infants enrolled in the study were admitted within 3 days after birth, and the Bell scores of NEC cases were all above IIA. Control Group: Every NEC case would be matched with 1 control without NEC based on GA, BW and the availability of samples of the same postnatal age as their matched counterpart (Figure 1).

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: Exclusion criteria: infants with congenital intestinal defects were excluded.
