Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: Patients had cirrhosis with history of episodes of esophageal variceal bleeding, and presented of large esophageal varices (F2, F3) on endoscopy

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: Exclusion criteria were total portal vein thrombosis, previous endoscopic treatment of varices (sclerotherapy or endoscopic band ligation) to prevent rebleeding, isolated gastric or ectopic varices, previous a surgical portosystemic shunt or TIPS, hepatocellular carcinoma or other malignancy, severe clotting defects, hepatic encephalopathy grade III or IV.
