Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: 1. single-level central soft herniation; 2. failed conservative therapy for at least 3 months or symptomatic deterioration; 3. neurological symptoms that were consistent with the results of preoperative radiological examinations; 4. herniated disc fragment that migrated upward or downward but was not free; 5. no evidence of instability in the cervical spine.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: 1. simultaneous cervical spinal canal stenosis; 2. multiple-levels herniated discs; 3. posterolateral herniation; 4. previous surgery at the same segment; 5. calcification of the herniated disc or posterior osteophytes of the vertebral body.
