Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: 1. aged 18-65 years old; 2. the diagnosis of chronic insomnia is made according to International Classification of Sleep Disorders, Third Edition; 3. a total score =11 on Insomnia Severity Index questionnaire; 4. given informed consent.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: 1. have experience on acupuncture for treating insomnia; 2. sedative hypnotic drugs and psychotropic drugs are taken unstably in the past month; 3. have a PSG-detected apnea-hypopnea index of 15 or greater or a periodic limb movement index with arousal of 15 or greater; 4. were diagnosed with psychiatric disorders according to Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-V); 5. a total score =17 on 17-item Hamilton Depression Rating Scale; 6. have insomnia symptoms due to other medical conditions such as pain or dyspnea or due to drug or substance; 7. have any serious physical illness; 8. have an infection close to the position of the specified acupoints; 9. have participated in any clinical trial in the last 3 month.
