Inclusion criteria
Inclusion criteria: Elderly patients (> 65 years old) undergoing hip or knee replacement orthopedics and major femoral surgery.
Exclusion criteria
Exclusion criteria: 1. with a score on the mini-mental state examination (MMSE) at screening of 23 or less; 2. with disease of the central nervous system; 3. were taking tranquillisers or antidepressants; 4. had been admitted for neurological or cardiac surgery; 5. previously undergone neuropsychological testing; 6. unwilling to comply with the protocol or procedures or were unable to understand the language used; 7. had any severe visual or auditory disorders; were illiterate; 8. illiteracy; 9. with Parkinsons disease; 10. alcoholism, or drug dependence; 11. if they were not expected to be alive for discharge from hospital or to be able to complete tests at 3 months after surgery; 12. Bone cement was used in the operation; 13. had intestinal disorders such as Crohn's disease, enteritis and diarrhea.
