Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: whose radiographs fulfilled criteria (confirmed by a study radiologist and systemic signs and abdominal signs) for Bells stage 2 or 3 NEC. Controls were matched with the cases from the same center in terms of gestational age, birth-weight, and birth date

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: 1. Congenital bowel defects. 2. Intensive light therapy for hyperbilirubinemia necessitating the use for three phototherapy lamps. 3. Any immunodeficiency disease. 4. Inherited metabolic dis-order. 5. Those who had undergone abdominal surgery before enrollment
