Male

Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: mechanical ventilation for more than 24 h, difficult in weaning or showed cerebral dysfunction (Glasgow coma score less than 7).

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: less than 18 years of age, platelet count less than 50,000 mm3, activated partial thromboplastin time 1.5 fold longer than the normal value, local infection in the neck area, trachea or neck abnormalities, systolic blood pressure of < 90 mmHg despite maintenance of blood pressure by more than two kinds of vasopressive agents, patients who previously received neck surgery were also excluded from this study
