Inclusion criteria
Inclusion criteria: Subjects will be male or female aged 18 to 65 years at the time of study entry. All patients will have been smoking cigarettes on a regular basis for at least a year. They do not have to express a specific desire to quit smoking, but will be willing to try a procedure which may reduce their craving for cigarettes or improve their cognitive function. All patients will be right handed. Schizophrenics will have a DSM-IV diagnosis of schizophrenia or schizoaffective determined by chart review and Mini-SCID. Schizophrenic patients will be currently treated with antipsychotic medication and have relatively stable levels of psychopathology. NPS controls will not meet DSM-IV diagnostic criteria for schizophrenia.
Exclusion criteria
Exclusion criteria: 1. Subjects with a current neurological CNS disorder (such as seizure disorder, stroke or multiple sclerosis) in the last year, or who are currently receiving medications for these conditions. Subjects who have had brain surgery or implanted electrodes in their brain; 2. subjects with a cardiac pacemakers or other electrically sensitive implanted devices; 3. Women of childbearing age who are not regularly using an established birth control method; 4. Subjects currently taking anti-smoking medication including nicotine patch or gum, bupropion, or varenicline and who do not wish to stop these medications. If subjects were on these medications, they will be off the medications for at least 3 weeks before entering the study; 5. For schizophrenic patients additional exclusions criteria will be evidence of a current acute exacerbation of mood or psychotic symptoms, recent violence or suicidal ideation, or a PANNS score =90.
