treatment group:Radix Astragali and Plastrum testudinis dosage was 10 g/day each for patients aged 1-3 years, 15 g/day each for patients aged 4-6 years, 20 g/day each for patients aged 7-11 years,or 3
Placebo group:placebo dosage was 20 g/day for patients aged 1-3 years, 30 g/day for patients aged 4-6 years, 40 g/day for patients aged 7-11 years,or 60 g/day for patients 12-18 years.

Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: 1. To be diagnosed as ß-thalassemia; 2. start transfusion after 2 years old; 3. no or occasionally blood transfusions(1 or 2 times per year)and maintain Hb >=7g/dl; 4. no blood transfusions for at least 3 months.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: 1. transfusion-dependent; 2. immunodeficiency; 3. poor renal or hepatic function; 4. current antianemic therapy; 5. poor treatment compliance, or 6. no regular visits for blood tests.
