Radix Astragali group:Oral Radix Astragali: RA dosage was 3 g/day for patients aged 2-6 years, 6 g/day for patients aged 6-12 years, or 9 g/day for patients 12-18 years
Placebo group:Oral placebo: placebo dosage was 3 g/day for patients aged 2-6 years, 6 g/day for patients aged 6-12 years, or 9 g/day for patients 12-18 years

Inclusion criteria
Inclusion criteria: 1) diagnosed as beta-thalassemia; 2) start transfusion after 2 years old; 3) Hb less than at least 10 g/dl; 4) no blood transfusions for at least 3 months.
Exclusion criteria
Exclusion criteria: 1) transfusion-dependent; 2) immunodeficiency; 3) poor renal or hepatic function; 4) current antianemic therapy; 5) poor treatment compliance, or 6) no regular visits for blood tests.
