Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: Patients aged 45–65 years and ASA class I–II, who underwent combined general/epidural anesthesia for elective gastrointestinal surgery.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: cognitive impairment; history of uncontrolled hypertension; a recent respiratory tract infection; history of respiratory disease such as asthma or chronic obstructive lung disease; heart block greater than first degree; kidney or liver disease; chronic use of antipsychotic medications; and body mass index >=30 kg m-2.
