Inclusion criteria
Inclusion criteria: The inclusion criteria can be categorized as follows: (1) centrally located HCC with no preoperative radiotherapy; (2) resectable lesion appraised by our surgery panel, with possibility of completely removing tumors and retaining a sufficient residual liver to maintain liver function; (3) age between 17 and 75 years; (4) compensated cirrhosis or no cirrhosis; (5) Child–Pugh liver function class A; (6) Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group Performance Status (ECOG PS) of 0 or 1. Patients who had received previous trans-arterial chemoembolization were eligible for enrolment in the study. The therapy must have been stopped at least 4 weeks before study entry.
Exclusion criteria
Exclusion criteria: We excluded such patients as: (1) presence of distant metastasis; (2) resection margin > 1cm; (3) palliative resection with tumor residual; (4) non-HCC confirmed by postoperative pathology. Eligible patients for adjuvant radiotherapy arm were requested to recover within 6 weeks after surgery and have adequate hepatic and renal function, a ECOG PS of 0 or 1, no fever and no active sepsis so as to tolerate adjuvant radiotherapy.
