20 Years to 60 Years
Inclusion criteria
Inclusion criteria: 1. Age of 20 to 60 years; 2. Low back pain and radiating leg pain, which resulted from lumbar disc herniation at a single segmental level, continuing over a 6-month period; 3. MRI evidence of small- and medium-sized herniated discs correlating with the clinically identified segment (contained disc herniation =50% compared with normal adjacent discs); 4. No neurological deficits; 5. Failure to improve with conservative treatment (physical and manual therapy and non-opioid medications); 6. Pain intensity >=5 of maximum 10 (NRS) and clear clinical signs of nerve root irritation; 7. No previous surgical intervention.
Exclusion criteria
Exclusion criteria: 1. Infection; 2. Spinal tumor or fracture; 3. History of drug abuse; 4. Multilevel symptoms or MRI evidence; 5. A psychological or cognitive disturbance or somatic disorder that could affect the outcome; 6. Structural spinal deformities or vertebral canal stenosis; 7. Intervertebral disc herniations equivalent to or greater than 6 mm or sequestered intervertebral disc herniations; 8. Pregnancy; 9. Allergy to contrast media or drugs to be used in the procedure.
