Inclusion criteria
Inclusion criteria: 1. diagnosis of type 2 diabetes mellitus (Engebretson et al., 2007) for more than 1 year with no change in diabetic treatment plan in the past 2 months, and without major diabetic complications such as coronary heart disease; 2. with a clinical diagnosis of chronic periodontitis according to the criteria of the American Academy of Periodontology (Wiebe and Putnins, 2000), with presence of >=16 teeth in the mouth.
Exclusion criteria
Exclusion criteria: 1. presence of systemic diseases other than DM that influence the course of periodontal disease; 2. active infection other than periodontitis or received periodontal treatment in the previous 12 months; 3. systemic antibiotic administration within the latest 3 months; 3. pregnancy or lactation; 5. refusal of informed consent.
