Inclusion criteria
Inclusion criteria: 1. cirrhotic patients with acute or recent (within 3 months) esophageal variceal hemorrhage; and 2. the degree of gastroesophageal varices was F2 or F3 in these patients, as revealed by gastroendoscopy.
Exclusion criteria
Exclusion criteria: Patients were exclude if they presented with one or more of the following: 1. association with hepatocellular carcinoma or other malignancy; 2. severe jaundice with serum bilirubin more than 100 mg L-1; 3. encephalopathy greater than stage II; 4. history of endoscopic treatment for esophageal varices for example EIS or EVL; 5. presence of hepatorenal failure with serum creatinine greater than 2 mg dL -1; 6. complete obstruction of the portal vein due to thrombos or other reasons; 7. severe infection ,especially biliary tract infection; 8. Budd-Chiari syndrome; 9. polycystic liver; 10. heart failure; 11. inability or refusal to give informed consent.
