Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: Adenocarcinoma of the gastric of GEJ; unresectable; at least one unidimensionally measurable lesion of >=1 cm or a residual nonmeasurable lesion; adequate bone marrow, liver (alkaline phosphatases <=3 upper limits of normal [UNL], total bilirubin <=1.5 UNL, AST and ALT <=3UNL) and renal function (creatinine <=135mol/L); WHOperformance status (PS) of 0 to 2; age 18 to 75 years. Previous adjuvant chemotherapy, if given, must have been completed at least 6 months before inclusion.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: Patients with CNS metastases, second malignancies, bowel obstruction, current diarrhea >=grade 2, symptomatic angina pectoris, or disease confined to previous radiation fields
