Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: (1) Every patient experienced low back pain for a minimum of 3 months and was diagnosed by clinicians for cLBP; (2) Pattern differentiation of cLBP patients referred to the Textbook of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Diagnostic standards for cLBP patients with kidney deficiency syndrome were as follow: waist pain and soreness, feels better with pressure and massage, weakness of legs and knees, especially after physical work, but can be relieved after rest in bed, repeated attack; lower abdominal contractive pain, bright pale face, cold limbs, shortness of breath and fatigue, pale tongue, thin and deep pulse; insomnia, dry mouth and throat, flushed face, feverish palms and soles, red tongue with little coating, wiry, thready and rapid pulse.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: Exclusion criteria included pain intensity less than 4 on a 0-10 visual analog scale (VAS); spinal disorders such as disc infections, spinal stenosis; neurological or psychological disorder; pregnancy or lactating women; and contraindications to MRI scanning.
