Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: Inclusion criteria(sepsis patiens): 1. Informed consent was obtained from patient; 2. Aged 18 years or older; 3. ICU hospitalization more than 30 days; 4. Diagnosed sepsis (identified or suspected infection, and satisfied two or more of the following): (1) Body temperature >38 degree C or 90/min; (3) Respiratory rate >20/min or arterial blood PaCO2 12×10^9/L), or normal WBC count with greater than 10% immature forms. Inclusion criteria (SIRS patiens): 1. Informed consent was obtained from patient. 2. Aged 18 years or older. 3. ICU hospitalization more than 30 days. 4. Diagnosed SIRS (satisfied two or more of the following): (1) Body temperature >38°C or 90/min; (3) Respiratory rate >20/min or arterial blood PaCO2 12×10^9/L), or normal WBC count with greater than 10% immature forms. Inclusion criteria(hospital-based control patiens): 1. Informed consent was obtained from patient; 2. Aged 18 years or older; 3. No infection occurred at latest two weeks.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: Exclusion criteria (for all patients): 1. Pregnancy. 2. Patients with immune suppression: including an absence of circulating leukocytes; the presence of preexisting hematological or immunological disease; patients with HIV or HBV.
