Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: The inclusion criteria for schizophrenia were the following: 1) matching the criteria for schizophrenia of the Diagnostic and statistical manual of mental disorders, 4th edition, DSM-IV; 2) aged 18 and 45 years; 3) years of education being greater than 9 years; 4) had to be right-handed. The inclusion criteria for healthy controls were the following: 1) age, gender and education pair-matched with schizophrenia patients; 2) age being between 18 and 45 years, 3) years of education being greater than 9 years; 4) right-handed.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: 1) had other psychiatric history including schizoaffective disorder, mood disorder, mental retardation, dementia; 2) had a history of alcohol or substance abuse; 3) had history of diabetes, thyroid disease, hypertension, cardiopathy; 4) presented with chronic neurological disorders; 5) had contraindications to MRI scanning.
