Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: Three hundred and sixty-eight patients with type 2 diabetes were selected at the General Hospital of Tianjin Medical University and Teda International Cardiovascular Hospital from January 2014 to June 2016. The subjects included 165 males and 203 females, aged between 40-79 years, who conformed to the 1999 WHO Diagnostic Criteria for Diabetes Mellitus. Three hundred cases of age- and body mass index (BMI)-matched healthy adults were also selected; these cases had a normal blood sugar, blood lipids and blood pressure.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: Patients with thyroid, parathyroid, adrenal, gonadal and pituitary diseases were excluded as were patients with severe liver, kidney and neoplastic diseases and those taking drugs affecting bone metabolism (such as steroids, VitD and its derivatives, calcium, diphosphonate and thiazolidinedione antidiabetics). No subjects smoked or drank significant levels of alcohol.
