Inclusion criteria
Inclusion criteria: 1. aged 18-60 years old male and female; 2. met the diagnostic criteria for a major depressive disorder as diagnosed with the Diagnostic Manual for Mental Disorders (DSM-IV); 3. Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression(HAMD)=17(17 item); 4. Convulsive therapy clinically indicated; 5. right hand; 6. Willing and capable of providing informed consent.
Exclusion criteria
Exclusion criteria: 1. Not suitable for ECT treatment, such as organic mental disorder, severe physical illness, substance abuse, head trauma, history of epilepsy, Parkinson's disease and other neurological disorders; 2. History of schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, bipolar disorder; 3. planning on getting pregnant or pregnancy; 4. allergic to anesthetics and muscle relaxants; 5. Patients wear devices that may be affected by repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (cardiac pacemakers, drug pumps, cochlear implants, brain stimulators, eye implants, etc.) or unsuitable for magnetic resonance scanning (If claustrophobic, etc.); 6. History of ECT in the past 6 months or Failure to respond to an adequate course of ECT in the past.
