Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: Patients: 1. COPD patients,clinically stable for at least 1 month; 2. male/female; 3. aged >=40 years; 4. current or former smokers (history >=20 pack years); 5. none of the patients had taken corticosteroids (either oral or inhaled) for a minimum of 4 weeks prior to the commencement of the study; 6. written informed consent was obtained. Controls: (1)none-COPD patients; (2)male/female; (3)aged =40 years; (4)current or former smokers (history =20 pack years); (5)written informed consent was obtained.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: 1. with history of asthma or other allergic diseases; 2. with other lung diseases such as interstitial lung disease, bronchiectasis and tuberculosis; 3. with concomitant confounding diseases such as infection, heart failure, connective tissue disorders, cancer, hepatic or renal diseases; 4. with reading or communication disorders; 5. taken corticosteroids (either oral or inhaled) for a minimum of 4 weeks prior to the commencement of the study.
