Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: Premature infants, birth weight <2500 g, with RDS of neonatal intensive care units

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: Respiratory failure not due to RDS, major congenital abnormalities considered to be life threatening or anomalies interfering with lung development or function (such as cyanotic congenital heart disease, pulmonary hypoplasia, hydrops fetalis and diaphragmatic hernias), sepsis, severe birth asphyxia (Apgar score of <=3 at 10 minutes) and intracranial haemorrhage (grades III or IV), informed written parental consent was not required.
