Inclusion criteria
Inclusion criteria: Medical Patients: 1. Patients over 18 years old; 2. Hospital stay =72 hours 3. Admitted for treatment of a serious acute medical illness listed in ACCP 8th and 9th Edition (American College of Chest Physicians); 4. Patients with written consent (by himself/herself or his/her legal guardian) can be obtained if needed. Surgical Patients; 1. Patients over 18 years old; 2. Underwent a surgical operation listed in ACCP 9th Edition; 3. Had a major traumatic event, not requiring an operation, including closed head injury (CHI); 4. Patients with written consent (by himself/herself or his/her legal guardian) can be obtained if needed.
Exclusion criteria
Exclusion criteria: 1. Patient admitted solely for diagnostic testing or hemodialysis; 2. Patient admitited for same-day surgery for which surgical procedures not requiring an overnight hospital stay; 3. Patients receiving medicinal anticoagulation treatment (for example receiving therapeutic dosage LMWH for AMI treatment, etc.) other than the anticoagulation regimen for symptomatic VTE diagnosed in the hospitalization; 4. Patients admitted for treatment of VTE (began within 24 hours of admission); 5. Pregnancy; 6. Patient is hospitalized for a chronic condition, rather than an acute medical illness; 7. Patients whose primary reason for hospitalization would have qualified them to be admitted in the following wards: Psychiatric, Pediatric, Palliative care, Maternity, Ear, nose and throat units, Burn units, Dermatological, ophthalmologic services, Alcohol/drug treatment wards, Rehabilitation units/wards; 8. Patient refuses to have his/her data collected in this survey if written consent is needed.
