Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: The inclusion criteria were as follows: aged 40 to 80 years, evidence of bronchial obstruction (a ratio of forced expiratory volume in the first second (FEV1) to forced vital capacity (FVC) of less than 0.70) measured via post-bronchodilator spirometry, and current exposure to biomass smoke (at least ten years of daily biomass smoke exposure) but without smoking or a current smoker (at least ten pack-years of smoking) but without exposure to biomass smoke. Participants were exacerbation-free for at least 1 month and had not been treated with corticosteroids for at least 3 months prior to the start of the study.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: The exclusion criteria were as follows: a diagnosis of any of the following diseases: active tuberculosis, asthma, obvious bronchiectasis, cystic fibrosis, interstitial lung disease, pulmonary thromboembolic disease; a malignant tumor; a history of thoracotomy with pulmonary resection; uncontrolled or serious diseases; or other symptoms that could potentially affect the spirometry test results.
