Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: (1) diagnosis of cryptogenic or symptomatic epilepsy by clinical and electroencephalogram assessment; (2) failure of adequate trials of at least two tolerated and appropriately chosen AEDs (whether as monotherapy or in combination), i.e. more than one seizure per month in the previous 6 months; (3) informed consent from parents and/or caregivers, who had to be able to administer the study drug and record seizures in a diary; (4) Aged between 16 to 45 years.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: (1) non-epileptic seizures; (2) progressive neurological disease or intracranial lesion; (3) generalized tonic-clonic status epilepticus during the past 6 months; (4) use of at least one other AEDs, but no more than three, at base-line; (5) female patients of child bearing age were required not to be pregnant; (6) poor compliance from parents/caregivers; (7) treated with traditional Chinese medicine; (8) hyperkalemia, acidosis, hyponatremia, no urine, liver and kidney dysfunction, diabetes mellitus.
