Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: The eligibility criteria included age 20-65 yr, American Society of Anesthesiologists physical status I-II, simple or multinodular goiter with goiter diameter less than 2 cm, and euthyroidism after thyroid function tests (TSH, free triiodothyronine and thyroxine).

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: Exclusion criteria included nodule diameter larger than 2 cm, substernal goiter, contraindication or patient refusal to regional anesthesia, a history of difficult intubation, probable cervical lymph node dissection for enlargement of lymphnodes diagnosed by preoperative sonography, pulmonary or cardiac risk factors, inability to use the VAS (visual analogue scale, consisting of a 10cm line, 0 mm=no pain, 100 mm=worst pain imaginable) system for pain assessment for language barrier, and previous cervical operation history.
