Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: All patients admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) with a diagnosis of sepsis or septic shock were considered for inclusion.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: patients younger than 18 years of age, pregnancy, patients who died in the first 24 hours after the onset of sepsis, metformin users, long-term ß-blocker therapy ,myocardial infarction, pulmonary edema, hemorrhagic shock, trauma,requiring immediate surgery,cerebraldisorder (seizures, trauma, stroke, hemorrhage, meningitis, neurosurgery), alcohol withdrawal, dementia, Parkinson disease, disabling neuromuscular disorders,advanced liver cirrhosis, chronic kidney hemodialysis, severe hypothyroidism, and advancedmalignancy.
