Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: 1. Patients who had had implantation of RV apical-based dual chamber pacing system due to bradycardia indications (commonly sick sinus syndrome), and, 2. who are able to program the AV interval to allow ventricular intrinsic sensing to occur.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: 1. Patients who had complete heart block or other cardiac conditions such that they are not safe to program the pacemaker to ventricular pacing-off mode temporarily; 2. Patients who had known history of heart failure or in acute clinical heart failure due to systolic dysfunction; 3. Patients with systolic dysfunction with LV ejection fraction <50%; 4. Patients who had biventricular pacemaker implantation; 5. Patients who are in permanent atrial fibrillation; 6. Patients who received single chamber pacemaker that pace either right atrium or RV; 7. Patients who had a ventricular lead placed in a site other than RV apex, e.g. RV outflow tract; 8. Patients with hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy; 9. Patients who refuse to participate the study.

to examine if dual chamber pacing has any deleterious effect on left (and right) ventricular diastolic function by means of various established echocardiographic techniques including Doppler echocardiography and tissue Doppler imaging;to examine whether dual chamber pacing will have differential effect on diastolic function in patients with and without pre-existing LV diastolic dysfunction.;to examine if dual chamber pacing has any deleterious effect on interventricular and intraventricular (within the LV) diastolic synchronicity;to examine the relationship between the diastolic and systolic function.;
