Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: 1. Women aged between 18 and 38 years; 2. Confirmed diagnosis of PCOS according to the Rotterdam criteria: Oligo, amenorrhea (less than 8 cycles per year) and one of the following two criteria; clinical or biochemical hyperandrogenism and/or polycystic ovarian morphology; 3. IR defined by the homeostatic model assessment (HOMA-IR: fasting insulin x fasting glucose/22.5) and 2.14 will be used as the cut off; 4. No desire of children and using barrier methods of contraception for 6 months; 5. Willing to sign the consent form.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: 1. Age >38; 2. Exclusion of other endocrine disorders such as hyperprolactinemia (s-prolactin /=6.5% = 52 mmol/mol indicates diabetes 35); 4. Blood pressure >160/100 mmHg; 5. Pharmacological treatment (cortizon, antidepressant, antidiabetic, hormonal contraceptives, hormonal ovulation induction or other drugs known to affect reproductive function or metabolism within the past three months, including oral contraceptives, GnRH agonists and antagonists, antiandrogens, gonadotropins, anti-obesity drugs, Chinese herbal medicines, anti-diabetic drugs such as metformin and thiazolidinediones, somatostatin,diazoxide, ACE inhibitors, and calcium channel blockers) within 12 wks; 6. Pregnancy or breastfeeding in the last 6 months; 7. Acupuncture in the last 2 months; 8. Language barrier or disabled person with reduced ability to understand information; 9. Patients with other endocrine disorders including 21-hydroxylase deficiency, hyperprolactinemia, uncorrected thyroid disease, suspected Cushing's syndrome; 10. Patients with known severe organ dysfunction or mental illness.
