Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: (1) Polycystic ovary syndromeFifty women with PCOS undergoing laparoscopic surgery for infertility will be recruited as study subjects. The diagnosis of PCOS is based on the latest 2003 Rotterdam consensus with at least two of the following features: (i) oligo-amenorrhoea or chronic anovulation; (ii) clinical and/or biochemical hyperandrogenism; (iii) ultrasound appearance of polycystic ovaries, after exclusion of other known causes of hyperandrogenaemia. (2) ControlAnother fifty age- and body mass index (BMI) matched women without PCOS, who undergoing laparoscopic surgery for infertility or laparoscopic sterilization for unwanted fertility will be recruited as control subjects. All of them has regular menstrual cycles and has no hirsutism/acne or ultrasound features of polycystic ovaries.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: The followings are the exclusion criteria in both groups 1. Usage of medications which are known to affect steroid or glucose metabolism (e.g. oral contraceptives, corticosteroids) within the past 3 months 2. Present of mitochondrial disorders or other endocrinological diseases (e.g. hypothyroidism, Cushing disease) or diabetes mellitus diagnosed by oral glucose tolerant test 3. Refuse participation of study or incompetence to make informed consent.
