Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: (1) patient who is considered to have rectal cancer by preoperative clinical or pathological diaginosis; (2) patient who has the operation completed with the sphincter-preserving surgery performed; (3) patients included by West China Hospital should be East Asians and those included by St. Paul's Hospital should be North Americans.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: (1) patient who is found not with rectal cancer by the postoperative pathological diagnosis; (2) patient who has the operation completed with the permanent stoma performed eventually; (3) patient who cannot have the treatment completely as planned; (4) If the patients included by the research center do not meet the racial condition.
