Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: AF was diagnosed by ECG or Holter recording in hospital. Diseases were coded by the medical staff in the discharging hospital according to the International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision (ICD-10). AF, PTE and CTE codes were I48, I74.402 and I66.903,respectively, and confirmed by any of the following examinations: Ultrasonic Doppler, CT, MRI, CTA or intervention angiography. Meanwhile the lacunar cerebral infarction and transient ischemic attack (TIA) were also regarded as CTE.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: not more than moderate native vavular disease and no heart valve prosthesis (biological or mechanical) or rheumatic valvular disease was present.
