Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: major depression diagnosis according to either the ICD-10 or DSM IV criteria, aged between 20 and 60 years

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: With a personal history of bipolar affective disorder, schizophrenia, mood incongruent psychotic symptoms, primary substance abuse or primary organic disease, current treatment with antidepressants, antipsychotics, mood stabilizers or any regular treatment for a medical condition. A general physical exam and a routine laboratory blood examination were conducted for all the study subjects and none of them presented inflammatory state at the time of sampling or leukocyte counts (granulocytes, lymphocytes, monocytes) outside normal ranges.
