Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: Patients over 18 years of age with a history of physician-diagnosed asthma of at least 1-year duration, who were using inhaled ß2 agonist alone.Healthy subjects over 18 years of age with normal spirometry were recruited for the study as a negative control group. They were free of a history of asthma, reactive disease, and respiratory tract infection within 4 weeks prior to the study and from other significant illnesses known to affect FENO measurement. Both of asthma patients and healthy subjects were non-smokers and during the last year had not been passive smokers.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: history of an acute asthma or respiratory tract infection during the previous month prior to enrolment; any active chronic cardiopulmonary disease other than asthma (including COPD); body mass index (BMI) was =25 kg/m2; on chronic immunosuppressive therapy; another acute condition; pregnant; could not provide informed consent or inability to perform spirometry and FENO measurements. Patients were dropped-out if any of the following adverse outcomes occurred during follow-up: recurrent acute exacerbation of asthma, initiation of mechanical ventilation or death.
