Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: 1. Patients aged >=65 years were included in the study; 2. Severe CAP, HCAP or VAP were diagnosed according to the modified American Thoracic Society guidelines if the patient fulfilled 1 major or 3 minor criteria: (i) Major: septic shock or need for ventilation; (ii) Minor: respiratory rate >=30 breaths/min; multilobar infiltrates (>2 lobes); confusion/disorientation; uremia (BUN level >=20 mg/dL); leukopenia (WBC count <4000 cells/mm3); thrombocytopenia (platelet count <100,000 cells/mm3); hypothermia (core temperature <36 degree C); hypotension requiring aggressive fluid resuscitation; or PaO2/FiO2 ratio <=250; 3. Sign the informed consent document.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: 1. Patients aged >=65 years were included in the study; 2. Severe CAP, HCAP or VAP were diagnosed according to the modified American Thoracic Society guidelines if the patient fulfilled 1 major or 3 minor criteria: (i) malignancies and known haematological disease; (ii) immunological diseases; (iii) likely to die within 48 hours.
