Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: The inclusion criteria were: HBV DNA >=104 copies/mL (or HBV DNA >=300 copies/mL for patients with hepatitis B cirrhosis); alanine aminotransferase (ALT) >=upper limit of normal (ULN) and =4 or >=G2 inflammation and necrosis on the liver biopsy.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: The exclusion criteria were: pregnancy or lactation; decompensated cirrhosis; history of psychiatric disorders, epilepsy, malignancies, or symptomatic heart diseases; history of drug or alcohol abuse; and co-infection with HCV, HDV, and HIV.
