Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: Peripheral lung tissue specimens were obtained from patients who underwent lung resection for peripheral lung cancers. COPD was defined according to the Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease (GOLD) 2007 (http://www.goldcopd.com). All patients with COPD had a forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1) <80% of the predictive value, a FEV1/forced vital capacity (FVC) ratio <70% after inhalation of 400 µg salbutamol. Lung functions were normal in control subjects and healthy smokers.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: Exclusion criteria included followings: other systemic diseases; other lung diseases apart from COPD and lung tumors; pulmonary infection and antibiotic treatment 4 week; inhaled or oral glucocorticoids in 3 months; chemotherapy or radiotherapy before lung resection; obstruction of central bronchi due to the tumor; absence of tumor-free or pneumonia-free lung tissue specimens.
