Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: admitted into ICU within the past 24 hours, requiring mechanical ventilation

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: less than 18 years old; mechanical ventilation time expected to be less than 3 days; survival time expected to be less than 10 days; delirium, alcohol abuse, dementia, disturbance of consciousness; requiring deep sedation (RASS<-2); allergic to any of the study medications; pregnant or lactating women
