Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: Patients 18 years or older consecutively admitted to the stroke unit within 24 hours after stroke onset were screened for recruitment. Patients with cerebral infarction with small-artery occlusion, defined according to the World Health Organization definition, were all included.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: 1. Patients with mRS score >=1 on admission; 2. patients who were unable to complete the baseline survey because of serious aphasia, language difficulties, or cognitive deficits; 3. patient with other medical conditions, such as severe heart failure, acute coronary syndrome, which prevented early rehabilitation; and 4. patients who were unable to provide informed consent.
